Professor Juanito Camilleri

Juanito is Chairman and resident Professor at the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Business Incubation at the University of Malta. He is also a non-executive director at HSBC Malta plc and Chairman of the bank’s Risk Committee, and a Fellow of the IC² Institute of the University of Texas at Austin. Juanito is non-executive Chairman of Harvest Technology and its subsidiaries.

He served as Rector of the University of Malta between 2006 and 2016. He was previously the Group Chief Executive Officer at Melita Cable plc, and, earlier, the founding Chief Executive Officer of go mobile.

Juanito read a Bachelor degree in Computer Science at the University of Kent at Canterbury, obtaining First Class Honours with distinction. He then moved to Cambridge to pursue a doctorate in Theoretical Computer Science which he completed in 1990, at the age of 23.

He began his career as a Research Fellow at the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, and at the time also worked as a Research Consultant.  He returned to Malta in 1992 and founded the Department of Computer Science and AI at the University of Malta where he worked until 1999. During this time, he was commissioned by the Government of Malta to formulate Malta’s first National Strategy for Information Technology which was published in 1994.

Since then, Juanito has served as a Director on the board of several public and private entities. He was also Malta’s representative on the European Union Joint Research Council.
